Words That Really Work
Words have to shine these days if they're going to be effective.
The need is not just for them to stand out from the crowd. You
may also want them to influence decision makers, touch hearts,
change lives or even sway nations. So how well are you employing
their power and potential?
In everything we do, words are worth getting right. But so often
we treat them with contempt. We're lazy with punctuation, mis-spell
even common words and mangle their meanings. And with thousands
of words to choose from, we still fall back on stale old ways
of saying things.
No one who creates messages of any sort can afford to be sloppy
in today's word-drenched world. Words can't be foggy, because
no one's got time to spare. And they have to be authentic, ringing
with the truth of what you stand for. Readers and TV viewers
know bullshit when they see it. All of us are looking for honesty.
With humour and authority, word-whiz
Lindsey demonstrates what works and what doesn't, raising laughs
with clunkers and spotlighting great moments – drawing inspiration
from sources old and new and as disparate as Winston Churchill
and Mae West.
Who would benefit from hearing her? Marketing,
advertising and public relations people, copy writers, newsletter
editors, website creators, report writers – anyone, in fact,
who needs to communicate with others and wants to be inspired
to enjoy their wordcraft more.

Wise Up to the Boomers – loved,
loathed and loaded
Born in the fertility surge that followed
World War II, the Baby Boom generation is going grey and the
marketing focus has switched to Gen X and Y and even younger
citizens. Accepted wisdom says youth is where the money is,
and that boomers, now the new ‘wrinklies',
are set in their habits, no longer influential, good only for
the drift into retirement. Right? Wrong.
Lindsey Dawson has spent a year interviewing scores of men and
women, aged from 40 to 60, about their lives. She's written a
book about that juicy and vital passage, called Wise up:
How to Be Fearless and Fulfilled in Midlife (published by Random
House).
In
defining the boomers for you, she won't give you screeds of
statistics and pie charts. She will give you what she has
learnt from both men and women – their worries and strengths,
triumphs and desires. Above all, their intention to live well
for a long time yet, in all senses of the word.
You want to know what middle-aged means? Lindsey, who's lived
through the boomer years herself, knows it well. With many years
of magazine-editing experience (including currently producing Plenty ,
a lifestyle magazine for Hanover Group clients) she has long
plumbed New Zealanders' needs and wants.
So if you think that older people are a spent force, think again.
You might be surprised. Smart, experienced, vital, well-heeled
(and, yes, even sexy) they are a generation you still can't afford
to ignore.
Who would benefit from hearing her? Marketing,
advertising and brand-management executives, anyone offering
products and services to the public - anyone, in fact, who wants
to know mature people better in human terms, not just statistical
ones.
