Untrue Art Stories
Love art history? Most famous artworks have their own dramatic back stories. Art history is not boring. We may gasp at hearing, for instance, that an artist barely earned a cent from their work in their lifetimes, even if it now sells for millions. We can feel for a woman who has posed for a portrait when we find out she had only a short time to live. We can wonder at how someone who battled deep depression could produce work that seems fuelled by ecstasy.
When I browse famous images, I often think, “I wonder what was really going on there?”
Here are some alternative short stories by me, inspired by truly fabulous old paintings,
PLUS notes on their actual histories.
